The "First Dance". Of all the ceremonial events that take place in a wedding, there is nothing quite like the couple dancing for the first time as man & wife.
Tears of happines flow from loved ones, triuphant warm and fuzzy feelings run throughout the venue. Is there anything more precious as the "First Dance"? I think not. I often get asked the question, "just when should we have this traditional spin around the dance floor"? Well, that's why you come here to the party blog. I have the answer as to what I think is the time to consider that all important connection for the Bride & Groom.
When I have planning consultations with my couples and timelines are being discussed, I get the opportunity to share my ideas about "The Dance". Here is what I have noticed at weddings and why I believe the "First Dance" should occur right after bridal party introductions.
Think about every wedding you have ever attended. Family and friends gathering in many cases for the first time in years. Libations pouring from moment one. A sense of excitement in the air as the reception or "main event" is about to take place. As the intro.'s start and the wedding party is summoned to the festivity, there is a calming effect that sweeps the room. I believe it's really the only time you truly have everyone's attention as the celebration commences. As I explain to my brides (because the grooms most often really know that the bride makes the call here) why not seize the opportunity and take that special time of the evening and have your dance.
Also, most weddings today still believe in dances such as Daddy/Daughter, Mother/Son, Grandpa/Bride and just about any other combo you could think of. Featuring all of these dances one after another can get a bit dry for your guests. Another great reason why the "First Dance" just works in it's own showcased part of the night right after wedding party intros'.
The bottom line, since I am a "bottom line" kind of guy is to not forget it's your wedding . Everyone has different thoughts and wishes for their special day and as a DJ, we try to make that day amazing. Just remember these two pro's on timing and maybe you too will agree why it's the right time to have that magical "First Dance" after your introductions.
